Dog Skin AllergyThere Are Many Different Causes Of Dog Skin Allergy. If You Suspect Your Pet Is Suffering From An Allergy The Following Information May Be Able To Help:.Skin allergies affect many dogs. Some breeds are more susceptible than others but they can affect any breed. Purebreds are largely affected due to the hereditary nature of some skin allergies. First and foremost, if you think your dog may be suffering and is presenting symptoms such as skin irritation, itching, excessive licking, swelling, bumps or hives, paw biting, ear infection or any other unusual behaviour it is important to seek advice from your veterinarian. Some canine skin allergies are seasonal, some hereditary and some environmental. The most common skin allergy in dogs is to fleas, and is known as Flea Allergy Dermatitis. For a pet suffering from this allergy, one bite from a flea can cause severe itching and other symptoms for 3 or 4 weeks and sometimes constant symptoms if bitten only twice a month. It is a reaction to the flea's saliva, flea dirt, exoskeleton or a combination of the three. Another issue affecting some but not all dogs with this allergy, is being sensitive or allergic to flea repellents. Flea collars are often a big issue and dogs with generally sensitive skin may react badly to the flea shampoos and drops. However, the most effective cure for Flea Allergy Dermatitis is prevention. Dog skin allergies are not only caused by fleas and other insects, but by various other allergens in your pet's environment. The very fabric that they are sleeping on or detergent used to wash their bed may be causing a reaction. Other allergens such as dust and dust mites, dander, plastic products, feathers, cleaning products and many more can cause an allergic reaction of the skin. Talk to your veterinarian about all of your dogs symptoms and environment to try and find the cause and possible treatment.
