Cat Allergy RemediesDoes Your Cat Make You Sneeze? These Common Cat-allergy Remedies May Help!Cat and pet dander are among the most widespread causes of allergic reactions today. Fortunately there are ways of mitigating the symptoms, so that you might be better able to enjoy your pet! A typical allergic reaction looks something like this: allergens induce a histamine reaction in persons with allergy sensitivity (hence the frequent use of 'anti-histamines' by allergy sufferers); reactions include inflammation, itching, rashes, and other symptoms. Unfortunately for sufferers, allergies can also exacerbate other medical conditions, such as asthma. Cats produce five known allergens, any one of which can produce an allergic reaction. The most common allergen that induces a reaction is produced by feline sweat and saliva. Since all allergens produced by cats tend to collect in their fur, there are some tricks you can use to reduce allergic reactions. The easiest and most effective method is to reduce physical exposure to the animal. Since this is not always possible, here are other ways to reduce -and possibly eliminate! - allergic reactions: reduce exposure to allergen-bearing fur and dander by purchasing an air filter or purifier. These devices (as low as $20 from local department stores) help to remove the offending elements free-floating in your environment. (As an added bonus, they also help with cleanup in general! ) Limiting your cat's presence in certain rooms of the house can help as well, specifically your bedroom. Additionally, make sure your cat gets a bath and brushing regularly to reduce the collection of allergens they carry. Better yet, have them professionally groomed by someone else! If medical treatment is preferred, various over-the-counter medications are now widely available to help combat allergic reactions; some are even effective for up to 24 hours. Allergy shots (also known as immunotherapy) might be a viable option for sufferers of more severe symptoms. See your doctor for more information. Cats are excellent companions, and if sneezing or itching has prevented you from enjoying the company of your pet, try some of these tips. You'll be able to love your pet more than ever before! |
