Canine Allergy Symptoms

Issues To Be Alert For When Viewing Canine Allergy Symptoms, An Article For The Owner.

As a dog owner, there are many things to be aware of, including the symptoms of allergies. Dogs can have many types of allergy, as varied as those seen in their human counterparts. Whether you have a Yorkie or a Great Dane, it is important to always keep an eye out for the canine allergy symptoms. Dogs can display food allergies, usually characterized by itching, licking, or chewing. Some dogs may also develop diarrhea or other gastro-intestinal ailments, and it is important to note that these allergies can manifest at any age. Owners should watch for these symptoms at all times, whether the animal has just begun a new diet or has been enjoying the same food for several years.

Another important allergy to note is Flea Allergy Dermatitis, or FAD. FAD is caused by the dog's allergy to the flea saliva, and some of the symptoms are chewing and biting various places on the body. A vet will check the animal by noting the usual symptoms (hair loss, skin sores, and fleas or flea dirt). The vet may also perform a skin test, to rule out other causes of these symptoms, such as external parasites (i. E mites and lice), other infections, or allergies. Canines can also develop a condition known as "atopy.

" Atopy is classified as an environmental allergy, due to airborne substances. These substances may include dust, pollen, mites, and animal dander. Atopy is diagnosed by eliminating other sources of the allergy, such as fleas and other common allergens. Treatments vary due to the severity of the atopy. Keep these canine allergy symptoms in mind when facing itching or other conditions with the dog and seek veterinary care when needed to keep your animal in the best possible health so that you may enjoy a rich, full lifetime relationship.
